Civic Education Alliance – "Mental Health Workshop" Class will conducted in Cantonese

In May 2026, Civic Education Alliance 's "Mental Health Well-Being Workshop" will be held over three consecutive Saturdays.

Dates: May 16, May 23, and May 30 (All Saturday)

Time: 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM (approximately 4 hours)

Location: Civic Education Alliance Office, located at Quincy Center, 1073 Hancock St., Suite 102, Quincy, MA 02169

The curriculum covers the following topics:

1. Introduction to Mental Health

2. Understanding Common Mental Health Conditions

3. Applying Workshop Knowledge to Support Others

4. Managing Elevated Stress and Crisis Response

5. Self-Care and Course Summary

Upon completing the course, participants will gain knowledge to improve their psychological well-being and will receive a $50 incentive from BCNC. Additionally, participants will receive a separate $20 incentive provided by Tufts Medical upon attending the post-course discussion session. A Certificate of Completion will be awarded, followed by a graduation celebration.

Frank Poon and Lisa Tong performed their duet “A Gambler’s Tale,” a Cantonese opera that tells the story of damage wrought by gambling, inside the Waymark Seventh-day Adventist Church in Dorchester on Dec. 4.(Lane Turner/Globe Staff)

The gatherings were the idea of Frank Poon, a longtime community leader with deep ties in Boston’s South Shore Asian community. He became alarmed by the outsized presence of older Asian men waiting on corners for casino shuttles.

Poon saw the mahjong gatherings as a way to foster discussion about compulsive gambling and its harms within the community. To stimulate dialogue, Poon would stride to the front of the room with a microphone and perform a song about gambling set to the rhythms of a traditional Cantonese opera. The song, called “The Gambler’s Tale,” described one man’s descent into poverty, heartache, and self-loathing.

“I am broken! I am scared!” Poon bellows in Cantonese as he sings. “I’m scared that I won’t have money for a plot to bury myself.” But his events came to an abrupt end last fall, when the building’s tenants association raised complaints about the crowds and noise. Disappointed but undeterred, Poon took his message elsewhere, performing at various Asian cultural festivals and senior homes. Sometimes, he shows up in a silk shirt decorated with gambling dice and tears it off in the song’s dramatic final verse, to symbolize the gambler’s break with his destructive past.

“I’ll keep singing that song until I die,” Poon said, “or until the casinos stop targeting my people.”

Graceful Dances: Xiaoping and Lucy performed an elegant rendition of "Yellow Rose." Later, Xiaoping led a group dance that brought two-thirds of the audience onto the dance floor in a moment of shared joy.

Classic Performances : Pan Renjie and Lucy showcased heroic spirit in "A Man Should Better Himself," while Lei Gong gave a unique and educational performance of the "Gambling Song" in Taishanese.

[Quincy, MA] — On December 20, despite the biting winter winds characteristic of a Massachusetts December, a surge of warmth flowed through the local Chinese community. The "Community Appreciation Celebration," meticulously planned and hosted by the Civic Education Alliance (CEA) , was held to great acclaim.

This event was far more than a seasonal gathering to bid farewell to the old and welcome the new; it was a profound dialogue designed to coalesce community strength and directly address pressing social challenges. Centered on the dual themes of "Preventing Gambling Addiction" and "Facing Mental Health Challenges," the event brought together over 80 community members from all walks of life. Amidst song, dance, and laughter, participants engaged in serious discussions about mental wellness, witnessed the shining moments of special needs groups, and paid sincere tribute to the selfless dedication of community volunteers.

Breaking away from the mold of traditional social banquets, CEA focused its lens on two pain points that are often invisible yet growing within the Asian American community: Problem Gambling and Mental Health Challenges .

The event received robust sponsorship and support from a coalition of authoritative institutions and businesses, including the MA Department of Public Health Problem Gambling Services , Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center (BCNC) , M-TAC , Tufts Medical Center , United Chinese Americans (UCA), UCACF, APAPA-Boston, NECAA, Lions Law (Attorney Dai Chenfang) , the Law Office of Yaran Pan , and East West Bank . Mr. Pan and his son joined forces with the Guangzhou Friendship Association Song and Dance Troupe to perform the anthem “A Man Should Strengthen Himself” (Nan Er Dang Zi Qiang). The rousing melody and powerful vocals not only showcased masculine vitality but also served as a metaphor for the inner strength and self-discipline required to face life's pressures and temptations (such as gambling). The image of father and son on the same stage powerfully conveyed the importance of family heritage and support in personal growth.

3. 舞动人生，拥抱多元 广州联谊会歌舞团带来的舞蹈表演，以优美的肢体语言展现了社区的活力。而Christine女士带来的伦巴舞（Rumba），则以其浪漫而富有激情的舞步，让现场观众感受到了生活的热情与美好。

The event drew to a close amidst a relaxed and happy session of KTV and freestyle dancing. At this point, the boundaries between stage and audience dissolved; guests, volunteers, individuals with special needs, and audience members merged into one, releasing stress through music and exchanging emotions through dance.

最后，全体与会人员进行了大合照。镜头定格的瞬间，不仅记录了80多张灿烂的笑脸，更记录了波士顿华人社区团结互助、追求健康生活的一个历史切片。

Finally, a group photo was taken. The shutter captured not just 80 brilliant smiles, but a historical snapshot of the Boston Chinese community’s unity, mutual aid, and pursuit of a healthy lifestyle.

The first graduation ceremony and barbecue celebration of the Mental Health First Aid course of Public Alliance Education (CEA) was successfully held.

On June 1st, CEA (Civic Education Alliance) held a unique barbecue celebration in the parking lot of its office building to congratulate the first batch of students who successfully completed the Mental Health First Aid course hosted by CEA.

十二位学员在欢乐的氛围中互相交流心得，并分享了掌握心理健康急救技能对帮助自身及身边人的重要意义，现场充满喜悦与感动。

Twelve trainees exchanged their experiences in a cheerful atmosphere and shared the significance of mastering mental health first aid skills for helping themselves and those around them. The scene was filled with joy and emotion.

The event officially began with a candlelight vigil outside the Thomas Crane Public Library in Quincy. The vigil opened in a warm and peaceful atmosphere, as numerous community members, social activists, and local officials gathered together to light candles in a unified show of concern and support against anti-Asian discrimination. The event also featured speeches by representatives from the Asian community, who shared personal stories—either their own or those of loved ones—about facing discrimination, in order to raise public awareness of the issue. The candlelight symbolized hope, serving as a gentle yet powerful message of unity and the community’s firm commitment to standing against hate.

March to City Hall: A Community Solidarity Action

Following the candlelight vigil, all participants walked together to the Quincy City Hall. The half-mile route led through main streets, with volunteers providing guidance and ensuring safety along the way. Participants carried candles and signs bearing messages of support, using their presence to express solidarity for equal rights for Asian communities. The march became a striking scene in the city of Quincy, spreading the core message of rejecting hate to more residents. More than just a symbolic gesture, the walk represented a concrete step in bringing the community’s voice to the seat of power, showcasing a strong spirit of unity and resolve in the face of discrimination.

After the march, the core segment of the event took place at City Hall, where 14 representatives delivered speeches directly addressing the serious issue of anti-Asian discrimination. Among them were Asian community leaders, sociologists, and other experts. Their remarks covered data analysis, personal experiences, and policy recommendations for the future. The following is a speech by Mr. Pan Jiancheng, Founder and Chair of Civic Education Alliance:

Today, we gather to express our deep concern about the issue of anti-Asian hate, particularly as it affects our elderly Chinese population. My name is Frank Poon, and I represent the Civic Education Alliance in Quincy. For the past 30 years, I have dedicated myself to assisting and supporting Chinese seniors in the South Shore area, and I would like to share the feelings and concerns held by many of them.

Most Asians are hardworking individuals who prioritize their families and strive to live comfortably in the communities they have chosen. It is important to recognize their commitment to building positive relationships with those around them. Recent incidents—especially those that occurred two years ago—have revealed disturbing levels of hate in our community, particularly targeting the Asian population.

This issue demands urgent attention from our government, and we strongly urge city officials to implement plans that promote harmony and peace throughout the city. Specifically, we ask the government to focus on the following:

Conflict resolution strategies to effectively address and manage potential disputes.
Educational programs that promote respect and understanding of diverse cultures.
Resources for individuals with language barriers to improve communication among community members.
Regulations and policies designed to prevent anti-Asian hate and acts of violence.
Community events that celebrate cultural exchange and encourage appreciation of different traditions.

By taking these steps, we can create a more inclusive and harmonious community for everyone. Thank you for taking the time to address this critical issue.

On October 6th, the Civic Education Alliance successfully held a grand community opening day at Room 102, 1073 Hancock Street, Quincy, Massachusetts. Nearly a hundred guests from all walks of life came to congratulate and support. The event lasted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the venue was filled with a cheerful and enthusiastic atmosphere. The Civic Education Alliance team and the attendees jointly witnessed this significant moment.

The activities on that day not only attracted 80 to 90 guests from the community, the education sector, and non-profit organizations, but also many friends and community members who have long supported the Civic Education Alliance came to the scene. Everyone was full of enthusiasm, expressing support and encouragement, and unanimously praised the contributions of the Common Alliance for Education in promoting community participation, empowerment, and providing educational support. These community-based supports undoubtedly injected tremendous confidence and motivation into the Civic Education Alliance team, driving its further development and growth in the future.

Mr. Frank Poon , the initiator of Civic Education Alliance, delivered a speech at the event, expressing his heartfelt gratitude to all the guests present and sharing the future development plan of Civic Education Alliance. He particularly mentioned that since its establishment, Civic Education Alliance has been committed to providing voter education and citizen participation opportunities for the local community, aiming to help residents better understand and participate in public affairs, and become more powerful community members.

In order to make the guests feel more warmth and care during their participation in the event, Civic Education Alliance specially prepared abundant free food for everyone to enjoy during the event period. The entire venue was decorated with various dining areas, offering a wide range of choices including traditional Chinese snacks, small treats, and beverages to meet different tastes. Whether it was steaming buns or sweet pastries, they were all loved by the guests.

While enjoying the delicious food, the guests also had the opportunity to have in-depth exchanges with other community members and the team of Civic Education Alliance. Many guests stated that providing free food not only enhanced the intimacy of the event but also created a favorable atmosphere for people to get to know each other and discuss community affairs. Many people took this opportunity to make new friends and discussed future cooperation opportunities with the team of Civic Education Alliance.

As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the main service direction of Civic Education Alliance is to encourage community members to actively participate in public affairs, enhance citizens' sense of social responsibility, and contribute to community development through educational empowerment. Its services cover multiple areas, including voter education, community empowerment, cultural exchange, and support for new immigrants, etc.

Mr. Frank Poon pointed out in his speech: "Our mission is to provide voter education and encourage citizen participation. We aim to support the overall well-being of community members by continuously expanding and deepening community services, and by connecting people of all ages to promote their joint participation in the discussion and decision-making of public affairs." The slogan of Public Alliance Education, "Connecting the Community", is the best interpretation of this mission. On the evening of September 4, 2024, at 6:00 PM, CEA Civic Education Alliance successfully hosted a gala entitled “Song and Dance for Peace: Celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival,” which attracted enthusiastic participation from numerous students, parents, and community members. The event was designed to celebrate the traditional Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival and promote Chinese culture through song and dance performances, displays of traditional customs, and cultural exchanges.

At the beginning of the gala, CEA Chair Frank Poon delivered a brief address, highlighting several key community issues and initiatives. 11月10日，在退伍军人节来临之前，麻州州长希利(Maura Healey)、副州长德里斯科尔(Kim Driscoll )、麻州退伍军人事务部部长圣地亚哥(Jon Santiago)、布伦特里市长科科罗斯(Charles Kokoros)和麻州参议员基南(John Keenan)、参议员沃尔特(Timilty Walter), 在麻州布伦特里镇(Braintree)退伍军人服务中心举行新闻发布会，宣布提交一项支持麻州退伍军人的法案。这标志着20年来麻州州长首次专门提出一项致力于退伍军人福利的法案。

CEA(公盟教育)主席潘鑒成(Frank Poon)、副主席俞国梁(Gary Yu), 受邀参与新闻发表会, 并与麻州政府官员就CEA在社区的服务内容及成立以来的成绩, 进行交流, 获一致好评。

On November 10th, before Veterans Day, Governor Maura Healey of Massachusetts, Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, Secretary of the Massachusetts Veterans Affairs Department Jon Santiago, Mayor Charles Kokoros of Braintree, Senator John Keenan and Senator Timilty Walter of Massachusetts held a press conference at the Veterans Service Center in Braintree, Massachusetts, to announce the submission of a bill in support of Massachusetts veterans. This marked the first time in 20 years that a Massachusetts governor specifically proposed a bill dedicated to veterans' benefits. Chairman Frank Poon and Vice Chairman Gary Yu of the CEA (Commonwealth Alliance for Education) were invited to participate in the press conference and exchanged views with Massachusetts government officials regarding the services provided by CEA in the community and its achievements since its establishment, receiving unanimous praise.

CEA首次社区服务日圆满成功举行

The first CEA Community Service Day was successfully held.

CEA公盟教育、新英格兰华人联盟(NECAA)与麻州萨福克郡地区检察署(SCDAO)的社区参与和社区再投资委员会合作, 联合Community Stakeholders、波士顿消防局(Boston Fire Department)、Rhythm ‘n Wraps一起合作, 利用暑假时间, 组织义工(特别是青少年), 举办社区服务日, 走入社区, 提供服务!

首次社区服务日在7月22日启动，当天在CEA副会长俞国梁、NECAA理事齐军和夏笑峰及其它社区侨领的带领下, 超过30位的青年义工团队, 与Community Stakeholders、波士顿消防局、SCDAO办公室一起, 来到波士顿的 Lindsey St, 通过打扫街道, 与社区居民增加沟通, 培养同理心!

CEA Public Alliance Education, the New England Chinese American Association (NECAA), and the Community Engagement and Community Reinvestment Committee of the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office (SCDAO) have joined forces with Community Stakeholders, the Boston Fire Department, and Rhythm 'n Wraps to organize volunteer service days during the summer, particularly involving teenagers, to provide services to the community.

The first community service day kicked off on July 22nd. Led by CEA Vice President Yu Guoliang, NECAA Director Qi Jun, and Xia Xiaofeng, along with other community leaders, over 30 young volunteer teams worked together with Community Stakeholders, the Boston Fire Department, and the SCDAO office to clean the streets of Lindsey St. in Boston, enhancing communication with community residents and fostering empathy.

NECAA Community Culture Day | Free Admission to the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA)

新英格兰华人联盟(NECAA)正在与波士顿艺术博物馆(MFA)合作, 联合美国华人联合会麻州分会(UCA-MA)、美国亚太联盟波士顿分会(APAPA-Boston)、美国亚太联盟波伍斯特分会(APAPA-Worcester)、美国公盟教育(CEA)等机构, 利用暑假时间, 组织亚裔青少年, 举办社区文化日, 走入波士顿艺术博物馆(MFA), 了解亚洲历史!

首次社区文化日, 我们将于7月21日启动，我们会召集40名亚裔青少年, 在波士顿艺术博物馆(MFA)工作人员带领下, 畅游著名的MFA, 通过专业的讲解, 了解我们自己的历史及美国历史!

The New England Chinese Association (NECAA) is collaborating with the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (MFA), along with the Massachusetts branch of the American Chinese Association (UCA-MA), the Boston branch of the American Asia-Pacific Alliance (APAPA-Boston), the Worcester branch of the American Asia-Pacific Alliance (APAPA-Worcester), and the CEA (Commonwealth Education Association), among others. During the summer vacation, they will organize Asian teenagers to hold a community cultural day and visit the MFA to learn about Asian history!

The first Community Culture Day will be launched on July 21st. We will gather 40 Asian teenagers and, under the guidance of the staff of the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) in Boston, explore the famous MFA. Through professional explanations, they will learn about their own history and the history of the United States!
